Scott Schanke and his mother, Arlene Abel, opened Cafe Voltaire as a Bay View haven for New Wave music, underground art, and avant-garde fashion. After a series of punk shows attracted police attention, the bar was sold to Jack Koshick in 1987 and became the Odd Rock Cafe.
