After the meatpacking district was condemned for the Park East Freeway, Jimmy Zingale opened Castaways in a former family tavern in July 1962. Originally a women's bar, Castaways quickly became Wisconsin's first gay dance club. At a time when gay men couldn't dance together in most major cities, Castaways didn't just allow same-sex dancing -- it encouraged it.
