The Chez Paree was a popular Pansy Craze cabaret. It was owned by Joseph Budar, "king of Milwaukee nightlife," godfather of the burlesque scene, operator of the very queer Royal Hotel, and notorious Prohibition bootlegger. It opened in 1934 with "Boys Will Be Girls" shows, live brass orchestra, and free champagne. To avoid raids, the club moved in 1937 to a remote (but difficult to find) location at 20th and Rawson. The club was sold in 1940 due to Budar's bankruptcy, but continued to feature drag shows until closing in 1946. By then, drag was banned in most American cities.
