Operating as a private membership club, the Club Baths national chain opened its Milwaukee location in June 1974. At the height of gay liberation, Club Baths were more than just a cruising spot. They were a community center for a generation of out and proud gay men. Devastated by the dual tragedies of the AIDS crisis and community resistance to safer sex, the Baths closed December 22, 1988 after a tuberculosis outbreak.
