At the peak of the River Queen's popularity, its owners launched a gay bathhouse across the street in the historic Produce Exchange Building. Following a syphilis outbreak, Gay People's Union, Sixteenth Street Community Clinic, and the City of Milwaukee Health Department joined forces to open the city's first-ever "homosexual venereal disease clinic" onsite. Although the Spa stopped advertising publicly, some say the bathhouse continued to operate secretly for years.
