The Conway Hotel, operated by a local family, evolved and expanded with Appleton over nearly 100 years. For many years, the Hotel's Aquarium Bar was listed in national gay guides. Some of its guests included President John F. Kennedy, President Richard Nixon, and Ella Fitzgerald. The hotel closed in 1976 and became a senior living complex. The building was demolished in 2013.
