Doris' Super Bar, initially a straight bar, was a long-time queer space in downtown Appleton. Prior to 1974, there was no dedicated gay bar in the Fox Valley. Owner Doris Colavecchi (1919-2003) agreed to "go gay" after discussions with Fox Valley Gay Alliance organizers. For the next three years, the bar was listed in national gay guides and served as a crucial meeting place for the FVGA. In 1977, the Super Bar was sold to a gay couple (Paul DeBruin and Gene Koenke) and renamed the Lambda Lounge.
