The Fox, a narrow 1880s saloon nicknamed "the Skinny Fox," opened in 1948 in the former sailor bar Clybourn Tavern. Under owner Otto Fenzel, the bar became a cornerstone of Milwaukee's first gayborhood, despite a concerning reputation for gay hustlers. Harry Kaminksy and George Bemis bought the bar in 1964 and began selling off its historic interior. With 794 approaching, The Fox closed on July 1, 1966, marking the end of Milwaukee's first gayborhood. While city planners believed they were eliminating "blight," renewal inspired the community to create a new gay village in Walker's Point.
