The French Quarter, originally owned by boxer Milton Rickun, opened in 1966 and closed in 1969. The dive bar was known for being lively, sketchy, and slightly dangerous. Infamous local lesbian "Spike the Dyke" hung out at the French Quarter, and in 1969, she shot a straight man in the foot for harassing her. (Both the bar owner and the police sided with Spike.) This was Wally Whetham's last employer before he left Milwaukee forever. The bar reopened as The Black Fox, a bar popular with Black and blue-collar lesbians, in 1970.
