The Friendly Bar, originally owned by Mirko and Julia Stjepanovic, became one of Milwaukee's most unlikely queer spaces after World War II. After her husband's death, Julia handed over management to three servicemen, who created a down-low hangout for gay men in December 1944. According to patrons, the extremely dark and quiet bar attracted very anxious, but very curious young men seeking same. The business model, relying entirely on word of mouth and absolute discretion, managed to survive for three years and launched an 80-year legacy of queer spaces at this address.
