Godfrey's 1800 Club was a Black gay bar that operated from 1960 to 1969. It was one of the first known Black gay bars in town and featured an all-Black drag cast throughout the 1960s. Godfrey's thrived at a time of tremendous systemic racism, white flight, neighborhood disinvestment, and civic neglect. When urban renewal arrived, the neighborhood lost over one thousand buildings (including Godfrey's) and over one thousand non-white, low-income families. Today, Kilbourntown-3 is a case study in how to destroy an urban neighborhood. It was so completely destroyed that no photos remain of its existence.
