The Grand Prix Lounge opened as a NASCAR-themed sports bar, but quickly became a popular gay bar. The "GP" is remembered as being racially integrated ahead of its time. Customers and national gay guides remember brawls inside and outside the bar, as well as shootings, muggings and bashings. To keep trouble out, Grand Prix was a "members only" club. In summer 1967, Grace Slick sang an "unplugged" number or two here after a Wisconsin show. The bar was decorated in original Al Hirschfield sketches. The Grand Prix closed sometine in 1971, followed by a 50+-year series of strip clubs.
