The Lambda Lounge, opened in mid-1977 by Gene Koenke and Paul DeBruin, was Appleton, Wisconsin's first out gay bar, located in a building that had been a previous gay-friendly establishment. Advertised as "The Fox Valley's One and Only Gay Bar," it was a haven for patrons who faced harassment and violence from local residents. Despite the dangers, the community stood their ground to be seen. The Lambda Lounge was listed in national and local guides until 1982, when it likely closed due to competition from the more popular nearby dance club, 1101 West.
