The Legion Bar, operated by Nicholas Marmigas, was a cruising spot during the 1940s. Customers report a secretive space where men paid a cover charge for anonymous backroom sex. Extreme discretion was required: no talking was allowed, eye contact was avoided, and pickpocketing was common. Customers reflected on the obvious dangers, but noted it was the way of the world at the time. The bar closed in 1949 and the building was razed. Based on his observations at the Legion Bar, former employee Angelo Aiello created a safer, more affirming space at the nearby Mint Bar (1949-1986.)
