Lysistrata was a historically significant bar and restaurant operating in Madison from 1977 to 1982. Founded as the Lysistrata Cooperative by UW professors, alumni, activists and artists, the venture sought to advance social, economic, and political power for all women. With over 100 shareholders and 400 members within its first 90 days, Lysistrata became a diverse hub for women of all ages, races, and classes. The space even served as a recruitment spot for the Madison Police and Fire Departments. The bar, along with four other businesses, was lost to arson on January 8, 1982.
