Matisse was a small dance club that operated from 1995 to 1998 with a strong Sunday night gay following. It was known for its art-deco decor and diverse clientele, from ravers to rappers to meringue dancers. When most gay dance clubs weren't playing house or techno, Matisse became a destination for electronic dance music DJs, including Derrick Carter, Josh Wink, and DJ Lego, as well as local favorites Synergy and Steven Kaye. At the height of its popularity, Matisse closed after its owner was indicted on money laundering and drug trafficking charges. The space reopened as Cush in October 1998.
