Formerly known as the Stud Club, and a queer cruising spot for four decades, the Royal Hotel Bar became Michelle's Club 546 in 1972. Operated by Sam Mazur and his trans wife Michelle, the club became a 24-hour cafe, dance club, and 7-day-a-week drag cabaret. The Royal Hotel was condemned for the Blue Cross Blue Shield redevelopment project and closed in September 1973. In exchange for their property, Sam and Michelle were offered the city-owned building at 235 S. 2nd St, where they later opened Oregon House, the Phoenix, and Deja Vu.
