The New Yorker Lounge was a Milwaukee gay bar that operated from 1952 until July 1975. Initially run by former police officer George Bemis, it was located at 605 N. 5th Street, across the street from the Lampost bar and diagonally from the Royal Hotel. Although listed in national gay guides in the early 1970s, it's believed to have catered to queer clientele for most of its existence. The New Yorker lost is license in a July 1975 crackdown on 5th Street vice. The building, which also housed the Loop Cafe and The Lib Bookstore, was demolished in 1986.
