The Parkway Theater, a former neighborhood cinema open since 1921, began showing adult films in 1970 and quickly became a target for police raids. Known as Milwaukee's most popular "porno chic" theater, it famously showed "Deep Throat." Despite near-constant legal battles, neighborhood protests, and even unlawful harassment by the City of Milwaukee. It is remembered as the city's first and last X-rated theater. Facing rising crime and declining business, the Parkway Theater switched to gay porn in 1982 before closing in 1986. The building was later razed, and the land was ceremonially exorcised by a pastor in 1993.
