Opening September 1973, the Mad Hatter was a disco located in a six-story furniture warehouse. It's remembered for its 72-foot-wide light-up dancefloor powered by 1,500 bulbs. Penny Beer Night, attracting >700 customers a night, almost cost the club its license, so Mad Hatter shifted to "Drink and Drown" Wednesdays with 25-cent drinks. The club was charged with sexual discrimination for charging men twice as much as women. Despite being straight, Mad Hatter's legendary dance floor attracted a loyal gay following. Listed in "swingers" magazines throughout the 1970s, Mad Hatter closed in September 1978 to become Park Avenue.
