We've been here all along! Gender non-conforming people have lived in Wisconsin before there was a Wisconsin. Drag shows have been happening in downtown Milwaukee for nearly 140 years. And believe it or not, RuPaul’s Drag Race wasn’t the first show to cause a drag craze in Milwaukee – in fact, it’s the fourth!
Milwaukee is one of the few American cities that never outlawed drag -- even as the nation's largest cities banned female impersonation for decades. After Seven Generations of Glamour, Milwaukee is now a springboard for international drag talent. Our authors take us on a tour of the highs and lows of drag history – and remind us, they’ve come for us in the past, and still we rise.
