"I Am My Own Wife' debuts Friday, January 23

Throughout a lifetime of repression, Charlotte preserved what others tried to erase: history, culture, art, freedom, and even herself.

We're excited to partner with the Milwaukee Chamber Theatre to celebrate gender expression and queer visibility in the performing arts!

I AM MY OWN WIFE runs from January 23 through February 8 at the Broadway Theater Center (158 N. Broadway, Milwaukee,) in a space once occupied by The Factory, Milwaukee's premier disco from 1973 to 1981.

The series kicks off on Wednesday, January 7 with a Here2Play panel discussion at the beautiful Dandy venue in Milwaukee.

The History Project will be hosting a lobby exhibit on Wisconsin's gender pioneers, including Frank Blunt, Ralph Kerwineo, Billie Herrero, Holly Brown, Josie Carter, Jamie Gays, the Only Leon, and more, throughout the run.  We will also host talkback events on Thursday, January 29 and Thursday, February 5, with a special Pride Night Preshow on Friday, February 6 featuring Candi Stratton, Karen Valentine, and Maple Veneer.

The Chamber Theatre will also host a Pay What You Chose Performance on Monday, January 26 for anyone experiencing financial hardships. Note that tickets are limited in quantity, offered first come first serve, and will be available at the door one hour before showtime.

Get tickets at the Milwaukee Chamber Theatre Box Office online, by phone (1-414-291-7800) or in-person (Monday-Saturday, 12-6pm and 2 hours before showtimes.)

About I AM MY OWN WIFE

Charlotte persisted through repression to preserve what others tried to erase: history, culture, art, freedom—and even herself.

This Pulitzer Prize-winner explores one of the 20th Century’s most singular lives: that of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, an openly gender-nonconforming antiques collector who boldly endured two of the world’s most repressive regimes in the Nazis and East German Communists while preserving countless Weimar and Jewish cultural artifacts in her East Berlin home museum. Beginning as a one-of-a-kind celebration of queer resilience and transgender experience, this solo performer tour de force gradually reveals a far more complex portrait of survival, truth, and the authentic life at the core of this remarkable true story.

Directred by Alexander Coddington, I AM MY OWN WIFE features Jonathan Riker and understudy Isa Spetz.

The production was designed and created by Maaz Ahmed, Sarah Hunt-Frank, Adam Hastings, Leo Madson, Martilia Marechal, Raeleen McMillion, Jazmin Aurora Medina, Josh Schmidt, Lauren Marie Stoner, Simone Tegge, Grayson Thobe, Dev Wiensch, and Emily Marie Wilke.

I AM MY OWN WIFE runs approximately 2 hours, with one intermission.
