Wisconsin LGBTQ History Project Fundraiser
If you appreciate the History Project's work, we hope you'll support the second fundraiser in our 29-year history!
We are a self-funded, independent, all-volunteer, non-profit team -- and we provide most services FREE to the community.
On Monday, October 13, we brought rainbow crosswalks to Walker's Point -- an LGBTQ destination for over 80 years and the home of Milwaukee's eight surviving LGBTQ bars -- at a community celebration that included business owners, nonprofit leaders, elected officials, media, and neighbors of all ages. The crosswalks, which line National Avenue at 2nd Street, were designed by artist Jeremy Novy and installed by city contractors Crowley Construction Company as an approved project of the City of Milwaukee Paint the Pavement program.
The crosswalks, which celebrate safety, belonging, and acceptance for all, were especially meaningful. On the same day of our celebration, the State of Florida Department of Transportation demolished seven-year-old Art Deco rainbow crosswalks in Miami Beach, and Governor Greg Abbott announced that Texas cities (including Austin, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio) would lose state funding if they did not remove theirs.
Milwaukee's public art project was only possible through the generous gifts of individual and organizational donors.
Today, we would like to thank EVERYONE for helping us BE SEEN in times of historic erasure.
In addition, we'd like to thank Crowley Construction Company for donating their time and labor and charging only for supply costs. This was unexpected, very generous, and extremely supportive. Thank you!
We'd also like to thank Dave Wolz and the La Cage team for hosting our community celebration!
Together, we are truly unstoppable.
It's not too late to support the project! The History Project is responsible for all ongoing care and maintenance. Make a tax-deductible donation today.
THANK YOU!
