Great Lakes Film and Video

Great Lakes Film and Video played a role in the formation of the Milwaukee LGBT Film/Video Festival.  However, we're not exactly sure what role they played, or how the organization intersected with the UWM Film Department and other festival sponsors. 

In 1991, InStep magazine reported that a new group, Great Lakes Film and Video was hosting local film screenings, including three films censored or banned by PBS (including Tongues Untied, Stop the Church, and Son of Sam and Delilah.) InStep reported that Great Lakes would also host "Voices of Life," a film by UWM graduate Patrick Wright, at the "Lesbian Gay Film and Video Festival" in 1992. Later issues reported that the "1st Milwaukee Lesbian/Gay Film Fest" would be occuring March 6-13, 1992 under the leadership of Great Lakes Film and Video. The group is listed as a primary sponsor of annual events until the "5th annual festival" in 1996, after which they are never mentioned again.

It's unclear if Great Lakes Film and Video was affiliated with the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee or an independent group. We welcome any available information about this organization.
