Neil Albrecht

Neil Albrecht came out in 1983, and has been a driving force in Milwaukee LGBT life for most of the time since.

Neil worked for the AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin (ARCW) for six years, beginning in 1992, first hired as the director of Volunteer Resources, serving in that position for a year. From that he moved into a deputy Director position and from that to a Regional director position.

Neil was deeply involved in establishing the Milwaukee LGBT Community Center; after serving as co-president of the Board, he applied for the position as its first Executive Director, and served in that position from 1999 until he resigned in 2004. During that time, the Center experienced tremendous growth and success, going from no staff and budget of $40,000, to 12 staff and an annual budget of $700,000. The Center relocated in 2002 from a warehouse building on S. 2nd Street to a larger quarters on Court Street (coincidentally in the building which had once housed the ARCW), and now provides incubator space for 13 other organizations, hosting about 5,000 visitors annually.

Albrecht was named In Step's Man of the Year in 2000, and in 2004 he received the Special Recognition Award from PrideFest.
