Conversations was not only a popular gathering place for Milwaukee's Black queer communities, but a major sponsor of the Black Gay Pride movement of the early 2000s. The bar was owned by Devon Duke, who sought to create a safe and vibrant space for Black gay folks in a time of limited social options. Although the bar closed in 2006, it continued to sponsor events at Jamie's Theatre Club (3945 N. 35th St.) through PrideFest 2007, after which the new location became Purr Nite Club.
