We can only assume Mister Z was Jimmy Zingale, "godfather of the gay bars" from 1961 to 1971. The previous incarnation, Gary's, was owned by Jimmy O'Connor. However, the Common Council voided his license on August 28, 1975 due to an ongoing River Queen police investigation. We believe Jimmy Zingale stepped in to run the business for six months until the legendary Circus Disco opened in July 1976. Grand opening ads offered a tri-level bar, 50 cent drinks, and "the latest disco in altec-quad sound." We welcome any available information about this location.
