From 1962 to 1969, the Nite Beat was located at 196 S. 2nd Street, becoming the first anchor for a new gay village in Walker's Point. For the next 51 years, there would always be a gay bar at this address. Nite Beat's spacious dance floor made it a regional destination for women. Due to frequent, violent brawls, Carrie installed a sawed-off shotgun behind the bar and enforced a strict policy of "no yelling, no screaming, no fighting, and no throwing drinks." After its bay windows were shattered multiple times in bar fights, Nite Beat's facade was boarded up for over 50 years. In 1969, Nite Beat moved across the street to its final location.
