Paradise Books, which operated from 1976 to 2003, began as an adult bookstore before separating its businesses into a mainstream video store and an adult-only arcade. The store opened when the city was actively considering a "Combat Zone" in the Third Ward, which would have forced all adult businesses, including gay bars, to relocate there.
