In December 1991, J.J. O'Connell rebranded the Shamrock Bar as "Phaze II," a name change that only lasted until September 1994. Unlike the more laid-back Shamrock, Phaze II intended to be a popular dance bar. The reason for the name and concept change is unknown. Fortunately, the Shamrock has survived to serve Madison's gay community for nearly 35 years and counting.
