In 1965, The Forum (1801 N. 12th St) changed owners and the Pirate's Den was born. Before Stonewall, Pirate's Den was a men's bar that welcomed both Black and white customers. Unlike The Forum, the bar did not have piano players or live music. After freeway construction ravaged the area, the neighborhood went into decline, and gay guides commented on the "rough neighborhood." Wally Whetham and his wife Giselle Corbeille worked at the Pirate's Den after losing Bourbon Beat and Captain's Cabin to bankruptcy. Eventually, the Pirate's Den closed, too, and was replaced by Marie's Get Involved Lounge in 1971.
