The Pivot, opened in early 1986 in Appleton by Gordon Fowler, quickly became one of the state's largest and most popular gay bars. Located on a large, secluded property, it drew crowds from across Wisconsin with its shows and national acts. The bar was extensively remodeled for its fourth anniversary, adding a new dance floor, stage, and sound system. Known for its central island bar and later, an outdoor deck and volleyball court, it remained a prominent destination until it closed in late 1996. The building was later demolished.
