From 2003 to 2016, the Rainbow Valley Resort operated as a rare gay destination in Wisconsin Dells. Owned by partners "Gary and Dennis," it was widely known as "Captain Dix" (the name of the onsite bar and restaurant.) The 100-year-old resort offered 24 acres of recreation, including a pool, tennis court, volleyball court, game room, an outdoor stage, and a clothing-optional sunbathing area, as well as day passes for local visitors. While the resort had a reputation for scandalous behavior, most customers reported a quiet, peaceful, and well-managed experience. The resort closed in May 2016.
