The Raulf Hotel, an Oshkosh landmark, opened April 1, 1928 with 160 rooms, a bowling alley, and a movie theater. Praised for its unique Moorish-East Indian architecture and terra cotta facade, it has always been a prominent part of the city's skyline. The hotel bar was consistently listed in national gay guides from 1963 to 1976. In 1973, artist Lester Schwartz bought the hotel, which he renamed Picasso Plaza Motor Inn affter his friend Pablo Picasso. In 1981, the entire building was converted into a senior living complex. After an extensive 2015 rehabilitation, the building became the Raulf Plaza Apartments.
