Scruples opened in Eau Claire in August 1992, replacing the gay bar The Back Door. After owner Clay Crowley held a "name the bar" contest, the winning name, Scruples, was first published in In Step magazine. The bar closed in March 1996. The location was then acquired by Wayne Marek, who also owned the nearby Trading Company. He reopened the space as Scooters on January 3, 1997.
