After The Seaway Inn (744 N. Jefferson St.) was demolished for parking in July 1972, owner Otto Schuller moved to the emerging gay village on South 2nd Street. He split his operation between 173 S. 2nd (Seaway Restaurant) and 196 S. 2nd (New Seaway.) Surprisingly, Seaway Restaurant outlived both the New Seaway and Otto Schuller. The restaurant suffered extensive damage in the Easter Sunday Inferno of 1974. It was later purchased by Art Guenther, who used it as "hoarding storage." After a long series of code violations and condemnation orders, the 144-year-old property was demolished in 2024.

Customers remember a lesbian couple operating the Seaway Restaurant at its 173 S 2nd St location. However, to date, no one has been able to confirm their names. Thanks to their commitment, the restaurant continued for six months after Schuller's death, and would likely have lasted even longer if not for the fire that consumed 80% of the block.
