Teddy's was Tony Machi's second act after the long-running Tony's Riviera (1948-1964.) Initially known as The Barn, it was renamed after Machi's son and changed from a jazz club to a disco in 1972. Located near the Gay People's Union headquarters, Teddy's was a very open and inclusive nightspot. More than just a notorious singles bar, Teddy's dabbled with "bisexual chic," and the club was listed in national swinger magazines. As disco faded, Teddy's became an urban cowboy bar -- complete with a legendary mechanical bull --before closing in 1985. The location is now Shank Hall.
