Owned by Melvin Andre (1913-1995,) a former Navy man and later the founder of Park Bank, the bar was a favorite among servicemen after World War II. Three Bells was popular with gay men, butch lesbians, and straight college students. Women were warned to stay far, far away, especially after the southeast dorms opened in the 1960s. Despite being a rough "townie" spot with nightly fights, it was well-known for its memorable neon sign and cheap beer. It was razed in 1969 for the Murray Mall project. Today, the Fluno Center stands on the former site of Three Bells.
