Milwaukee will always remember The Unicorn, a famous music venue in the Sidney HiH basement. But did you know that Gus Hosseini opened the Unicorn in February 1984 as a gay bar -- replacing his earlier gay disco (Goldenshaft) in the same space? The subterranean club was actually designed for a previous tenant, Mineshaft, later known as Lost Dutchman Mine. Unicorn transformed this dark and forbidding space to create a maze of interconnected dancing, drinking, and mingling rooms. Customers remember "heavy" cruising and heavy poppers. After six months, the bar went "straight" and began hosting alternative music shows.
