Clientele Primarily Identified As
Lesbian
Wildwood was a notorious lesbian bar in Milwaukee throughout the 1960s. Known for its tough clientele of "bull dykes" and "Amazons," the bar was a sanctuary where women were fiercely protected from male harassment. Despite its rough reputation, it was a safe haven for Black and white women to mingle. Owner Norman Ver Bruggen was convicted of allowing minors and homosexuals to gather there, as well as a series of "thrill kill" robberies. The bar closed in 1964 and the building was later razed.
