Lavender Commitment

Lavender Commitment played a role in the formation of the Milwaukee LGBT Film/Video Festival. However, we're not exactly sure what role they played, or how the organization intersected with the UWM Film Department and other festival sponsors. 

According to InStep Magazine, Lavender Committment was a "gay/lesbian arts group" that sponsored the earliest Gay/Lesbian Film Festivals at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. There is evidence that Lavender Committment supported film festivals from 1983 to 1988, but no evidence of any related events happening from 1989 to 1991. In 1992, InStep reported that the "1st Milwaukee Lesbian/Gay Film Festival" would be happening March 6-13 and sponsored by Great Lakes Film and Video due to the demise of Lavender Commitment.

Lavender Commitment was never mentioned again.

It's unclear if Lavender Commitment was actually affiliated with the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee or existed as an independent group. We welcome any available information about this organization.
